Sump pumps
What a sump pump really costs.

Homeowners get a sticker shock on sump pump quotes because most companies bury the line items. A typical Quali-Dry sump pump install runs $1,400 to $2,800. Here's where every dollar goes.
The pump itself: $300–$450 for a commercial-grade Zoeller or Liberty cast-iron primary. The cheap plastic ones at the box store are $120, but their lifespan is half — and the cost of failure is a flooded basement.
The basin and lid: $80–$140. Sealed lid with a radon-ready vent if your house needs it.
Battery backup pump: $400–$600. This is where most homeowners cut corners and regret it. The storm that floods your basement is also the storm that takes out your power. A primary pump alone can't help you then.
Labor and discharge plumbing: $500–$1,200. This is the line that varies most. A simple replacement of an existing pump takes 2 hours. A new install through a foundation that's never had one is closer to a full day.
Permit and inspection (where required): $50–$150. Some Detroit-area townships require it; some don't.
If a quote you're looking at doesn't break these out, that's a flag. Ask for them. Any honest contractor will give them to you.
